Poker at Yossi's

Last night we played poker at Yossi's. Adrian, Gary and Nik were there, as was Ariel, making a guest appearance. I don't know what Yossi made Gary and Adrian for supper.
We played poker. It was quite nice. We hummed Christmas carols in what can only be described as a very very twatty way. Jona would definitely have enjoyed it.
By the end of the evening it transpired that, like other things in his life, Gary's celebrations at being the IPK 2007 champ were premature. Yossi overtook him to finish the year 360 shekels up. However, Gary remains the highest weekly average winner. If only he'd been at poker more often (30 times, to Adrian and Rafi's 41).
So that's that for the year. We look forward to the return of the travelling Kings in 2008.

Poker at Gary's

Last night poker was played at Gary's. These were the remarkable scores:

Eric: -19.5
Yoss: -13
Ariel: +12.5
Gazza: -69.5
Rafi: +163.5
Adrian: -78.5

Rafi apparently had the nuts from beginning to end, which makes his achievement at breaking the all-time biggest win somewhat less impressive. Note that the previous record was only set last week!

Rafi claims to have shafted Gary royally on the last hand, when having flopped a straight, Gary couldn't force his opponents out. Gary also burnt some popcorn.

Because he finished the night top of the yearly chart, Gary got to wear a crown:

And now here is a special bonus chart. It shows each King's average weekly wins or losses.

Poker at Adrian's

Last night all of the Israeli Poker Kings played poker at Adrian's house. I don't know what was for supper, but I do know that it involved chips and humus.
The poker itself was quite eventful. Jonah broke the most money won in a single night since records began record with a whopping 149 shekels. Rafi continued his impressive downward slump. Gary once more put a gap between himself and Yossi.
Upon Nik's arrival, he and Jona were shown the famous viral video clip, "Two girls, one cup" (I do NOT recommend that you watch the video). YouTube is full of clips of people watching said clip. Here is our contribution:

Adrian tried to get us into the Channukah spirit by singing naff B.A. songs: religious words to famous tunes. However, in the spirit of 2girls1cup, the Kings could not resist making up their own saucy lyrics to Oliver Twist's "Who will buy?". Much hilarity ensued.
It is possible that we played the last game of 2007 last night.
Scores on last nights doors were:
Jonah 149
Adrian 1
Gary 5
Nik -35
Eric -7.5
Rafi -32
Jona -26.5
Yoss -54

(Interesting fact: the Blogger.com website's built-in spell-check doesn't recognise the word "YouTube". This is surprising seeing as Google owns them both. Oh well.)

Poker at Jona's

Last night everybody except Yossi played poker at Jona's rather echoey house. Yossi was learning how to get killed while wearing a brand new effod and carrying a snazzy M-16. Jona served Thai-style chicken curry, which was delicious. Nik brought Salt and Vinegar Pringles, which were also delicious, but, surprisingly enough, contained lactose. Odd.
Poker started with an awful lot of noise and very little concentration. Eric was sending emails, Jona was being rude to his sister-in-law, Gary was trying to point out that the story in Nomi's Sleeping Beauty book wasn't accurate, Jonah shouted about it being OK that the World Series of baseball is open only to American teams. Eventually we imposed a silence rule and things calmed down a bit.
Nik told quite a hilarious story about the time he went to a restaurant and asked for breasts instead of a menu.
We ate jam donuts.
Rafi lost all his money, despite playing two hands blind. He didn't buy in for any more, which makes him a spoilsport. Eric lost 52.5 shekels, taking him 1.5 shekels away from the -400 mark for the year.
Jona was the big winner with 59 shekels.
The end of 2008 is nigh. I haven't decided whether to continue this year's graph or start another one, but if there are any graphs you would like me to produce based on this year's winnings and losings data, now is the time to suggest them.
Scores on last night's doors:
Gary 22
Nik 19.5
Jonah 32
Jona 59
Adrian -5
Eric -52.5
Rafi -75

Poker at Nik's

On Monday we played poker at Nik's. We=Nik, Eric, Rafi, Adrian, Gary, Jonah and Yossi. The non-vegetarians ate not enough sausages, slightly soggy chips, and inadequate amounts of nosh, including an odd humus snack. If it's any consolation, the veggie option was all that tasty either. Adrian drank three cups of lemon and honey tea and wore Etty's woolly hat all evening long.

Yoss was the evening's big winner, with Adrian being the only other player to finish with more money than he started the evening. He must be really good when he's healthy!

Comedy value was provided when Gary and Rafi decided to start playing blind. Having not won a hand between them in the first hour of play, they figured that they couldn't do any worse . But they didn't expect to do quite so well! The next 5 or 6 hands were won by people who didn't look at their cards until all five were on the table. One time, the fifth card was a diamond, and I said, oh, I bet Raf has got the ace high flush. And guess what? Raf had the ace high flush! Honestly!! We laughed and laughed. This kind of thing happened a few times.

Nik made the "I've seen Rounders" joke again. Boy is it a good one. I predict a long shelf-life for that one. Or at least until Nik sees Rounders.

Another thing that happened was that Eric took all his clothes off.

Here are the numbers from Monday night:

Adrian 53.5
Eric -21.5
Gary -33
Nik -14.5
Rafi -27
Yossi 85.5
Jonah -43

AND HERE'S A BONUS CHART!!!

This chart shows everyone's biggest win and biggest loss. Interesting things to note are:

1) Nik has won more in an evening than anyone else (131 shekels)

2) Jonah has lost more in an evening that anyone else (123)

3) The biggest losses incurred by Rafi, Jonah and Jona are bigger than their biggest wins

4) Remarkably, Gary has never lost more than 35 shekels in a single evening

Poker at Eric's

Poker:

Raf +9.5
Ad +104
Jona +4.5
Ariel +1

Yoss- -62.5
Eric - 56.5

Summary:

This week, after almost 4 years of poker playing, Rafi gave away his "tell". It's pretty difficult to notice, and you'll probably miss it nine times out of ten even if you're paying attention, but when he has good cards he will fart thunderously, the room will fill up with a noxious odour and the walls and windows will shake from the aftershock for the next 10 minutes.

Suprised that we missed that one for so long....

Poker at Jonah's

Yossi sent me this fascinating and hilarious report on last night's poker:

Gary 25
yoss 34.5
raf -57
ads -35
eric 15
jonah 17.5

Poker at Yossi's

Last night, Yossi, Nik, Eric, Jonah, Rafi, Adrian and Gary played poker at Yossi's house. Yoss served up griddled sausages and chips. There were LOTS of crisps on hand. We sat at his enormous table.

We played lots of the four-card game, until the very end, when we played the two-card game, which enabled Gary to come from being quite down to being a little bit up. Yossi was the night's big loser, this time falling down the abyss rather than looking it fearlessly in the eye and overcoming it. Adrian was the big winner, but I think most people let him win out of sympathy for his imminent arse invasion.

I don't remember what we discussed during the game, which means it can't have been all that exciting. However, last night Nik was on scintillatingly amusing form. Who could forget the time he piped up, "I saw 'Rounders'"? Jonah and Rafi perked up like teenage pricks on the back seat of the bus and both asked, "Really?", as Nik knew they would. This enabled him to quip, "No", to general hilarity. Everyone seemed quite pleased with the practical joke involving his mate's mobile phone too. So well done Nik.

Ten shekels went missing at the end. Jonah was out of pocket. Quite a mystery.

We talked about where poker should be next week. Eric offered. It hasn't been at Eric's for quite some time, so maybe that's a good idea.

Scores were: nik 12.5; adrian 42.5; eric -12.5; rafi -6.5; jonah 21; yossi -51; gary 4.

Poker at Gary's

Last night poker was at Gary's. I wasn't there so I don't know if anything amusing happened. Yoss sent me this email:

Jonah 56
eric 23
adr 3
yos -35
gaz -35
raf -12
It would appear, then, that the tables were somewhat turned last night.

Poker at Adrian's

Last night we played poker at Adrian's. In attendance were Adrian himself, Jonah, Yossi, Rafi's cousin Mark, Nik, Eric and Rafi. I arrived too late for food, but I'm told that Adrian served up some disgusting frozen quasi-schnitzel things with a low percentage of chicken contents, and a high percentage of crap. Crisps were served in plastic bags.

Eric joined us even though he had run a marathon but 24 hours earlier and had a very stiff love muscle. Yossi stared the abyss in the face (does an abyss have a face?), but rallied to end up the night's biggest winner. He trails 8 shekels behind Gary on our table. HOWEVER, he owes me two numbers for when we played at Gary and Jonah's (as do Rafi and Eric). If he doesn't give me those numbers soon I'm just going to guess wildly.

Adrian and Jonah seemed extremely pleased with their immensely laboured gag about me having the nut. Not a bad gag, all in all, but the giggling build up perhaps undermined its power somewhat. It's nice to know my goolies are a subject for discussion even in my absence.

Adrian mis-dealt, dealing in Elijah for one hand. But then I don't need to write that Adrian mis-dealt. We can take that as read from now on.

Mark carried on from last week's crazy betting practices, though this time it cost him money. He was also involved in a controversial last hand, where he could have taken three quarters of the pot but instead split it fifty-fifty with an unforgiving and ungenerous Nik. But a guy who plays loopy poker all night, saying that it's only money, doesn't deserve too much pity. Still.

Next week at Yoss.

Scores on the doors at the close of play were: Adrian -12; Eric -59.5; Jonah -1.5; Rafi 11; Jossie 101; Nik 33.5.

Poker at Jona's

Adrian sent me this mail:
The LOSERS:
Gerry Myers: -23
JP Cummings: -41
J Pransky: -16
Rayfel: -4
The CHAMPS:
AD: +14
Josey: +56 (remarkable given he was 100 down with about ½ an hour to go).
Mark Landis (Rayfel’s cousin): +13 (also remarkable).
(yes – it’s one shmek out, we know).
Yes indeed Nicolas, there was a game in the end. Jonathan went back to Raanana and raided his mother-in-law’s drawers, rustling up all manner of what once upon a time, you would find in the knobs and knockers section of John Lewis (Brent Cross). With each man provided with a bowl to contain his knick knacks, a splendid, if not somewhat surreal game was played. And we ate some delicious spag bol with thick spag – with no veggie poncers to spoil the show.
Rafi added: We discussed various body parts:

Jonah's son's 2 eyed snake

Poker at Rafi's

On Monday we played poker at Rafi’s. Present were Rafi, Jona, Yossi, Nik, and Adrian. I imagine Rafi served up a very tasty supper, but as I arrived after supper time I wouldn’t know for sure.
Nik was the big loser. Yoss was the big winner. Rafi did well too.
More than anything, though, Monday’s game was a masterclass in card dealing ineptitude from Adrian. It started when he turned the turn card before betting had finished, and then wanted to deal the river card before we’d managed to bet on the turn. But we can let that go. Next up was Adrian’s attempt to turn the 4 card game into the 5 card game. But you know what, we can forgive him for that too.
The best of all was when Adrian forgot to burn a card before dealing the final card on the table. Oh well, we said, we’ll carry on as is. Rafi won the pot. But then imagine Yossi’s anger when it turned out that the card that should have been dealt would actually have given him the full house! How we laughed. And especially Adrian, who found Yossi’s misfortune at his hands absolutely hilarious. Adrian’s punishment was to not be able to choose which game we were going to play when it was his turn to choose. He was suitably chastised (yeah right). Fortunately, Adrian finished the evening on a five shekel loss, so there is a small degree of justice in the world.
Jona made fun of Adrian quite heartlessly. And quite funnily too.

Poker at Jona's

On Monday poker was played at Jona's house in his sukkah. Present were Jona, Yossi, Gary, Adrian, Rafi and Jonah. I wasn't actually there, but I guess that Jona fell off his chair, Jonah make some comment in American that needed translating into real English, there was a fair amount of discussion about all kinds of sport, there was some nice food, drink, and nosh, and everyone had a lovely time. Apart from Rafi who last all his money, and that after losing his temper on email about people being tentative. Bet he wished he'd kept a bit quieter now.
Meanwhile, I'm still missing data from Rafi, Yossi and Jona, from when we played at Gary's and at Jonah's. Please provide, chaps.
Monday's scores in full were:
Yossi 23 up
gary 30.5 up
adrian 3 up
jona 34.5 down
jonah 43 up
rafi 75 down
The odd thing is that this is 10 shekels out. But who really cares?

No poker at anyone's house

We didn't play poker at anyone's house last night, despite Eric's kind offer. Lots of people were tentative, a couple were no-nos. So ultimately, there was no game.

Poker at Nik's

On Monday (wow, ages ago), we played at Nik's house. There were Nik, Jonah, Adrian, Gary, and Rafi. We ate sausages and looked at undercooked chips. We ate very few crisps, oddly enough.
The evening was quite subdued. The major event was when Jonah started playing silly buggers with Adrian. They two were re-raising one another like plonkers, when all of a sudden Jonah's full house turned out to be worse than Adrian's. He lost all his money, but preferred to sneak out rather than buy some more chips. I think I spotted a tear or two in his eye as he left. Hopefully he's feeling better by now.
The rest of us finished the evening up, with Jonah basically distributing his money between us.
I've managed to lose data for the chart. I've got this week's and last week's, but seem to be missing the week before that and maybe the week before than too. I can't be bothered to guess all of you wins and losses. So you have to look at the pictures below and tell me how much you reckon you won or lost. Tell me which person's house we were playing at too. Sorry for the balagan.

Poker at Jonah's

Last night we played at Jonah's. Present were Jonah, Nik, Gary, Jona, Adrian, and Rafi. Also present, but virtually untouched, were some foul, spicy sausages. And some not very tasty chips. And drinks from the Pepsi family. And plenty of crisps, but no green doritos or bacon flavoured ones.

A relatively calm night of poker passed over us. Rafi had 4 of a kind at one point, but even that failed to ruffle too many feathers. Jona didn't fall off his chair. Adrian and Jonah didn't have a b!tch fight. Though we did have a laugh at the expense of BICOC, and the possibility that Grenada might want to join too. Ho ho ho.
Adrian pulled himself out of the red. Gary consolidated. Rafi crept towards Yoss. Jona and Jonah both lost.
The end.
(Next week at Nik's. OK, Gary?)

Tuesday, 4 September 2007

Poker at Gary's

Last night we played poker at Gary's. Sitting in his garden were Gary, Adrian, Yossi, Ariel Zauer, Rafi, Nik, and Eric. Gary barbequed some supersol burgers and made Nik some little pizzas. There were crisps left over.
The biggest loser was Rafi's brother, Ariel, who lost 85 shekels. I actually think this is quite impressive seeing as he didn't win a hand all evening. He might have won one but for the infamous flush fuck up in the game with four cards.
Adrian lost again. Indeed, a quick glance at my data reveals that in our last eight games, Adrian has sustained net losses of 257.5 shekels. For only the second time since records began, he has dropped below zero. (The first time was ages ago, and he was on -.5 for one week.) I'm sure we've all noticed that when Adrian is losing he doesn't half moan about it.
Meanwhile Gary surged ever upwards while Eric keeps up the rear with his lovely pink line.
Jonah would have come but he had to do something about his Fantasy Football league that involved standing in a breeze. I don't understand American sports.
Yossi made a pathetic joke about Kashmir.
Something else funny happened and I said to myself that I'd put it in the blog but I can't remember what it was. If you remember, perhaps add a comment.

Poker at Yossi's

On Monday we played at Yossi's. We were Nik, Jonah, Yoss, Rafi, Gary, and Adrian. We ate spaghetti. Lots of nosh. Lots of drink. No problems in that department at all.

We had a reasonably quite night's poker. Adrian was the big loser. Yossi the big winner, with Jonah making an impressive showing too.

The funny moment of the night was Adrian dealing the river card from his own cards, and this despite burning a card from the right pile. How we laughed.

Other events of interest on Monday included the interesting betting style adopted by Jonah, which irked Adrian somewhat. When he felt justified in doing so, Jonah raised the blinds, and also tended to bet quite big on the flop. Adrian didn't really like this. Whether this was because it was preventing him (and others) from participating in more hands, which makes the game less fun (according to Adrian), or whether it was because he had terrible cards and was getting narked by that is anyone's guess. Or perhaps Jonah was inspired by Adrian's description of him as a reckless better, a term that he uniquivocally rejected. We shall never know.

Poker at Rafi's

Last night we played poker at Rafi’s. Sitting around the white foldable table were Rafi, Yossi, Adrian, Jonah, Eric, Jona, and Nik. Apologies to people whose nicknames I’ve forgotten. Rafi made a very tasty chicken dish and some good oven chips. Drink and crisps were bounteous.
So much happened last night. The most notable event was, of course, when Jona (of whom more later on) fell off his chair. It all started so innocently. He had knocked over a cup and was leaning over to his right to pick it up off the floor. However, he tipped his chair off balance and fell to the floor. The fall was quite quiet, and Jona landed reasonably elegantly on his backside. It was very very funny.
Later in the evening (or it might have been earlier, but who cares?), when we were playing the game with four cards, Jona folded before the flop. He then showed us his cards, to demonstrate how wise his decision had been. Except what he had in his hand was an ace, a three, a king, and something else. How we shouted at him. Especially me. It was good fun.
I was hoping this whole blog would only be about Jona, but another large Mancunian (that’s English for “person from Manchester”, for our foreign chums) ought to be mentioned. Yossi was last night’s big loser, taking an extra 120 shekels from the bank in order to carry on playing. The fact that he only finished 74.5 shekels down is more due to Rafi’s humungous betting on his one off the nuts hand, and his erroneous assumption that Yoss and Jonah (who salvaged his evening with this hand) were going to quarter the pot. It should be noted that there were quite a few hands with lots of money, which made for some exciting poker.
The best bit of the evening, though, was after we had all gone home. Did I say “ALL gone home”? I mean, after MOST of us had gone home. While the other Poker Kings were tucked up in bed, Jona was chatting away to some chump in the you ess of ay until the battery on his phone went dead. By now it was very late. I’ll go home now, thought Jona to himself. Little did he know that Orly was worried. Worried enough to call the police, who tortured Adrian until he agreed to call all the Kings to see if any of us were holding Jona in our dungeons, slowly picking bits of flesh of his body with red hot pincers. I think I heard the phone ring and receive two text messages at 2.30 in the morning, but I didn’t get out of bed to have a look. If it’s really important, I said to myself, they’ll ring again. And again. Until I answer. That didn’t happen, so it can’t have been that important, I reasoned. Rafi did speak to Adrian, and was told that Jona was missing! Rafi almost put on some clothes and went to look for Jona in the streets of Tel Aviv (almost went to look for Jona, notice). Jonah also almost went looking for Jona, who was pleasantly oblivious to all the balagan going on around him.
Jona eventually arrived home to find a police car outside his house and Orly in tears. She was fearing the worst of all. When Jona got out of his car and saw the police and Orly in tears, he too feared the worst of all. Orly ran up to him screaming, “where have you been, where have you been?”, beating her clenched fists on his chest. “I hate you, I hate you!” she screamed through her copious tears, before hugging Jona and crying “I love you, I love you!”. Jona could not hold his emotions back and he too started crying. “The kids…” he stuttered, “I thought… the kids”. His relief came out in streams of tears. One of the policemen, so moved by the scene, sobbed a little bit too. His partner gave him a hug. This broke the sexual tension that had been building up between them and they both resolved to leave their wives and move to Mexico together. Anyway. Jona eventually realized the source of Orly’s heightened emotional state, and apologized from the bottom of his heart for making her worry so. Never again would he let her think that he had been brutally murdered by terrorists and left dead (not to say, dismembered) in a Tel Aviv gutter. Or decapitated in a horrific accident, his car crushed by a lorry being driven by a man with 3,583 driving convictions (note political satire sneaking in, there. Topical stuff). Everyone was so relieved that everyone else was safe and sound. Jona and Orly retreated into their house and kissed passionately. Jona thought fondly of his grandmother.

Poker at Adrian's

Last night poker was played at Adrian's. In attendance were Phaedron, Henry, Rayfel, Josey, Jonanna, and Johan. I wasn't there, so don't ask me who they all are.
Adrian is in free fall, and has traded 3rd place for 4th with Rafi, who for some time now has been bobbling up and down the hundred up mark. Eric returned to form by losing money. Rafi did quite well.
Adrian has a surprise waiting for him in his letterbox. That's all for now.

Tuesday, 31 July 2007

Poker at Eric's

Last night we played poker at Eric's. We shall never be returning to his Tel Aviv pad, though. Which is a shame, mostly because of the opportunities to peek at the people showering in the neighboring building. Anyway, present were Eric, Yossi, Jonah (in body, if not in mind), Raf, Nik, and Nik's brother, Greg.

We ate big bits of chicken and chips. Nik ate lovely homemade veggie burgers. They really were a treat. There was plenty of nosh and drinks, though the Schweppes sparkeling fruit drink smells of vomit.

Jonah was the evening's big loser. He lost all his stake remarkable quickly, was persuaded to buy in some more, lost that too, bought in some more, and lost that too. All in all, he was a massive 123 shekels down, dropping two places in the overall leader board. He mumbled something about not being focused before scarpering off home early. Eric was the night's big winner - that's two weeks in a row. However, he's still over 200 shekels down since records have been kept. Nik picked up over 80 shekels too, playing some quite sublime poker on the way. Well done Nik.

The evening was quite quiet and we played lots and lots of hands. There was an efficient, workman's-like atmosphere. Lots of money went back and forth between the players (though in Jonah's case it was almost exclusively "forth").

Rafi broke his plastic fork on his chicken. He always does that.

Poker at Gary's

On Monday evening we all played poker at Gary's. Two different meals were on offer: a meaty option, and a veggie option, which was eaten by no small number of Poker Kings. You might think this was because certain Kings have seen the light and joined Nik in his ideological vegetarianism. But no, it was actually because it's nearly 9th Av. Oh well.
The most amusing events of the evening took place in the very first hand. Adrian and Gary bet each other loads of money. Gary proudly displayed what he thought was a full house. It took Nik (of all people) to point out to him that he is only allowed to use two cards from his hand. Gary had done the full house f*ck up. Meanwhile, Adrian thought he had a low (or something) but he didn't. So Gary took all the money (for having a pair or three of a kind). Once the cards had been cleared and the chips gathered up by Gary, Adrian realised that he had had a club flush. Meaning he would have taken the money after all. How we laughed.
At first, it was quite hard to pick the cards up off the table, so we took the unconventional, but quite necessary step of replacing one of the packs of cards with another.
Other notable occurrences were Eric not losing money and Adrian finishing the evening extremely down, and actually in 3rd place overall. Maybe we can now put this Gary/Adrian nonsense to bed. The real competition is between Gary and Yossi... Gary was the big winner.
Rafi left half way through the game.
We're not playing next week because of aforementioned 9th Av.

Poker at Nik's

Last night, Gary, Adrian, Rafi and Jonah came to Nik's to play poker. The food was a bit disappointing. Nik forgot to do onions. Etty had bought less tasty sausages than usual. And the chips were a bit soggy. However, there were leftover drinks and green Doritos, so it can't all have been bad. Notably, Eric halted his downward spiral and showed his solidarity with the poor folk of Sderot at the same time. Perhaps God does reward the worthy after all.

Rafi was the big winner. Nik was the big loser. Adrian moaned about not feeling very well. We played lots and lots of poker. The music was soporific so we listened to the Stones and Lauryn Hill instead of latin jazz.

Today's bonus chart shows the much-hyped rivalry between Adrian and Gary (homoerotic tension, anybody?). It shows how much more money Adrian has than Gary. Adrian definitely has the upper hand.

Poker at Jona ('s parents-in laws')

Last night we all played poker at Jona’s in-laws’ residence in Raanana, just off Achuza. Jona made some very tasty chips and wings. No one mentioned anything, but it’s probably worth noting that the ketchup was not made by Heinz. No green Doritos, but very spicy ones instead. I don’t recall a single complaint about the food, drink, or snacks, actually, so well done Jona.
We played quite a lot poker, way overstepping our midnight bedtime. Yossi made lots of money. Eric and Jonah lost lots of money. No change at the top or bottom of the overall winnings/losses chart. Nik got four of a kind twice, but gave it away the second time by utterly failing to control his quite understandable excitement.
It is quite possible that Adrian gave Eric some manual relief under the table.
I’ve made another graph. This one shows the difference in winnings and losses between the people who are top and bottom of the graph at any one time. The graph will make unpleasant viewing for Eric.

Poker at Yossi's

Poker was played at Yossi's by Adrian, Jonah, Jona, Eric, Yossi, Gary and Richard, Adrian's nephew (who finished the evening 9 shekels the richer). Gary and Adrian are opening up a huge gap at the top. Eric is descending rapidly into bankruptcy. Nik is pleased he has missed the last two weeks. At least he hasn't got any poorer.

Tuesday, 19 June 2007

Poker at Jonah's

Poker was played at Jonah's last night. Adrian, Rafi, Gary, Eric, Yossi and Jonah played. Adrian had this to say about the evening's entertainment:

"It was actually a pretty crazy night: Jonah got in a big fight with his neighbours about the noise we were making, fortunately Josey used his great diplomatic skills and his considerable size to cool the situation down; car crash outside the apartment involving lots of shouting, police and ambulances; AND Jonah set fire to his shirt when cooking the sausages. Girth of certain body parts were measured, with Jonah's being indisputably the thickest (although, certain unconfirmed estimates believed that Jona could be a challenger). Plenty of crisps and drink."

Once more, it appears that I missed a great night's fun. Damn. The graph is opening up like {insert rude comment about Jona's grandma here}.

Poker at Adrian's

Last night we all played poker at Adrian's place. We played on his balcony. The weather was perfect. We ate hot dogs in hot dog buns, with onion rings and latkes. There wasn't enough fizzy pop. We didn't listen to any of Adrian's two or three CDs (thankfully, because I think we've all had enough of Frank Sinatra by now).

Adrian was the big winner, and Eric the big loser, though Jonah did quite well too. The graph is becoming interesting. There are three distinct groups developing. Adrian, Gary and Rafi and all very much up, while Eric, Nik and Jona are all very much down. Jonah and Yossi are bumping along the zero line. Does this mean that some people are actually better at poker than other people? Or must we remember that a couple of good or bad weeks can change things quite drastically?

Jona's 85 year old grandmother featured quite heavily in yesterday evening's banter. I'm not quite sure what Jona did to deserve that, but it was all very amusing.

Equally amusing was yet another hi-lo cock up, and Adrian's betting heavily on a three of a kind (or full house?) that he quite patently didn't have. Oh, and Jona's failing to see the straight that he quite patently did have.

Gary would like you all to know that next week we are at Jonah's.

Poker at Rafi's

On Monday we played poker at Rafi's place. The Kings in attendance were Nik, Jonah, Eric, Adrian, Gary, Yossi, and our host, Rafi. Dinner was hamburgers and chips, served in pre-cut buns. There were burgers left over. Nik ate veggie schnitzels. Yummy yummy.

We drank the new flavours of fanta - orange/mango, and pineapple/grapefruit. The former was quite disgusting. The second smelt of semen. This observation led to an interesting discussion of what Adrian used to eat for dinner as a young child. If you clicked on the link above, you will have noticed that Fanta are doing one of those campaigns where they get people to film their own ads and send them in. So get your thinking caps on and perhaps we'll shoot and ad or two at Adrian's and win the prize!

We also played some poker. Undoubtedly the highlight of the evening, at least to judge by the crowd's response, was Rafi's huge bet for a low hand that didn't exist. He bet 5, Yoss raised him ten, which he saw and raised another ten (I think. Anyway, you get the point). Then he proudly displayed what he thought was the nuts low, only to realise, at the very moment of displaying his cards, that there weren't three low cards on the table. What a dick, but how funny for everyone else, especially Yossi.

Gary was the evening's big winner, zooming up into second place in the overall rankings. Jonah, Eric and Yossi all had dire evenings. Just imagine how much worse Yossi's would have been without Rafi's incredible screw up.

Next week at Adrian's (happy, Gary?).

Poker at Nik's

Last night, Rafi, Gary, Adrian, Jonah and Eric played poker at Nik's. Yossi let it be known in advance that he would not actually be coming, despite his email saying that he would be. But not everyone went to those lengths... We ate hot dogs and chips, though Nik should have put the chips in the oven earlier. There were left over green Doritos for Nik to enjoy over the next few days. Adrian complained he was hot, but I think he just wanted to show us his underwear.

We discussed Rafi's mother. We listened to pop music. Raf and Gary won nicely. Nik lost stacks to some very good hands; this is in no way a reflection of his skills as an Israeli Poker King.

So here's an interesting graph. I'll tell you what it shows. You know how some people's lines in the regular graph go up and down like crazy, while others are more stable? So this graph represents that. It shows the amount that each IPK has won OR lost per week. So you can see, for instance, that I tend to be involved in big money transfers each week, while Gary neither wins nor loses big. Quite fascinating, no?

Poker at Eric's

Last night we played poker at Eric's. Present were Eric, Yossi, Jonah, Rafi, Gary, and Nik. Eric made a couple of chickens and burnt chips for supper. Nik ate some lovely vegetarian lasagne. There were no green Doritos at all, though the cheesy Mexican ones were ok. Drinks were good, except for the Melon Fanta, which gave Jonah neck spasms. Michal had bought it, though to be fair, Eric had told her to go for "toxic".

The evening finished with some confusion, as the winnings and losings were ten shekels out. Someone had made a mistake, but who? We shall never know. During the evening's play we coined the phrase, "full house fuck up", which is when you think you have a full house in Hi-Lo but actually you don't because you can only use two cards from your hand. "Full house fuck up" sounds good because of the alliteration of the letter F. And it has the word "fuck" in it, which is always nice to say. We played a lot of poker, going round the whole table one and a sixth times. There were no HUGE hands or amazing cards. Jonah told us about his miluim. It sounded ridiculous.

Poker at Yossi's

On Monday night, Jona, Rafi, Adrian, Nik, and Eric assembled to play poker at Yossi's flat, with its high ceilings and the son of a bitch musician living just upstairs. We ate spaghetti bolognese. Yossi made us drink his left over fruit juices. Nonetheless, he is to be commended for providing a bag of green Doritos per poker king. (Though I'm still not sure whether this is enough. How much would enough be?)
The chart shows a lot of movement. Nik forfeits his place at the top, lurching downwards uncomfortably, along with Yoss and Jona (who made one of those classic hi-lo mistakes). Raf and Adrian shoot upwards gleefully. So does Eric, but he still doesn't manage to creep over the zero line.
I don't really remember what we talked about. I just remember losing loads of chips to Adrian's four fours. And I remember that Jona's name is still causing no little trouble to certain of the PKs.

Poker at Gary's

Last night poker was played at Gary's. In attendance were Gary, Rafi, Yossi, Jonah, and Adrian. Gary put on a BBQ (hurray!), but failed to provide green Doritos (boo!). Rafi was the big winner (if big is the right word for being 23.5 shekels up), while Jonah lost about that amount, thereby dropping 3 places in the rankings. Yossi failed to take advantage of Nik's absence.
Adrian talked about arses and the sun in a stupid way. And there was a lively conversation about wives and lesbianism. (The best conversations seem to happen when I'm not there. Doh.) While mobile phones were kept deep in pockets, the television was left on in the background, much to Jonah's annoyance. In an email correspondence, he said that the "billiards" was on; however, I suspect that he is in fact referring to the final of the most important snooker tournament of the season. He should be thankful that he didn't have to stay up to watch it until the end, as it wasn't over until 12.52am UK time. And that's even later than we stay up to play poker.

Documenting the Poker Kings with Rafi's phone

Brace yourselves for a multi-media onslaught. First up are some photos of us looking great.
And now for some ridiculous videos.

Poker at JonaH's

After a short break, forced upon us by Israel's 59th birthday party, we were back in full force at Jonah's house. Present were Jonah, Eric, Adrian, Nik, Jona, Gary, Rafi and Yossi. Jonah served chicken wings and undercooked chips. There were plenty of green Doritos (though I'm sure I heard someone looking for some more after they had all been eaten). More interesting than the Doritos, however, was the range of soft drinks, which included Pepsi and Miranda.

We played hi-lo all night long, which suited me great, but Jona less. Yossi was the night's largest loser, leaving 92 shekels on the table - not bad for an initial stake of 75. His losses cost him poll position in the poker chart, which was quite remarkably taken by Nik, who last week was floundering in last place. In fact, lots of people changed places this week. Jonah and Gary pulled themselves out of the red, overtaking the freefalling Rafi and Adrian in the process. Eric and Jona continue to do badly. Possibly the most wonderous sight of the evening was Nik's extraordinary pile of chips - over 200 shekels of them. Nik, we salute you!

Other news: Rafi's phone seriously excited Yossi. But from next time, phones are to be kept discreetly in pockets.

Poker at Adrian's

After a two week Pesach break we played at Adrian's. Present were Adrian, Eric, Nik, Rafi, Jona, and Yossi. Adrian cooked sausages and chips with buns. There were two sausages left over. Drinks on offer were Diet Coke, Sprite, and some fruit drink for Rafi. There was plenty of green Doritos.
The cricket was on in the background, which made for a distracted evening. The games went slowly and there were no huge hands or really great hands. I don't think there were any really funny jokes either. Yossi was the big winner, Adrian the big loser. Then we all went home.

Poker at Nik's

Last night we played poker at Nik's. Hot dogs were served in lovely fresh bread rolls.
Poker was played. Only hi-lo, if I'm not mistaken.
Jona returned, and it was lovely to have him back. Even if he was really late.
I really have very little recollection of what happened yesterday apart from playing a few hands with a child asleep on my lap. The usual paedophilia and scatological jokes, I guess.
The table suggests that two distinct groups of players are taking shape: those who can play poker, and those who can't. It will be interesting (kind of) to see how things shape up over the next few months.
No energy for this today. Bad night's sleep.

Poker at Eric's

Last night we played poker at Eric's. In attendance were Eric, Yossi, Jonah, Nik and Rafi. We ate chicken and chips. There was no shortage of sweet 'n sour Doritos whatsoever. Well done Eric.
The main talking point of the evening has to be Nik's stupendous performance. Not only did he break the "100 shekel up" mark for the first time since records began, but he also finished the evening as the only player to have made any money, a feat he previously accomplished a while ago. This kind of success testifies to Nik's cool head under pressure, his ability to read his opponents, and his uncanny understanding of the rules of Omaha Hi-Lo. Oh, and his really excellent cards (4 kings, anyone?). In recognition of Nik's most admirable showing last night, the other players rose to their feet at the end of the evening to applaud one of the game's modern greats.

Poker at Rafi's

Last night we played poker at Rafi's. Present were Rafi, Yossi, Jonah, Eric, Nik, Adrian, and special guest star, "Da doo ron" Ron. Eric was the big winner, with 63 shekels in winnings. Jonah was the big loser. He lost 50 shekels. That's two thirds, or 66.6666666666% of his initial stake. He lost all that money despite playing quite well. Still, he did lose it. (I hope this detailed description makes up for the short description of his winnings a couple of weeks back.)
There was some apprehension regarding Big Ron's ability to take our x-rated banter, but that apprehension proved to be ill-founded when Nik most humoursly checked with him that he would be fine with Eric discussing the sex acts he performs with Ron's daughter. Ron reacted with good spirits and the tone was set.
Yoss made a lot of bad jokes and Adrian rang him up to tell him they were funny. We listened to a radio station with a mixture of great classics and terrible non-classics.
And of course the food: Rafi provided chili con (and sin) carne with rice. Proper cooking that was properly tasty. Well done Rafi.
The graph is interesting this week. It shows a small breakaway group of some men, some other men hovering around the zero, and Nik in freefall, heading toward bankruptcy. If only we'd started this chart in November, then Nik too might be hovering around the zero. Still, there's much more poker to be played.

Poker at Yossi's

We played at Yossi's. There was Yoss, Gary, Jonah, Nik, Rafi, Eric and Adrian. Chicken and chips. Not enough green doritos, but lots of Swedish fish.
Rafi was the big winner; Adrian was the big loser. Nik finished exactly even. Jonah and Yossi's charts still show a remarkable similarity (though Yoss is doing better than Jonah, it should be mentioned).
Most of the conversation revolved around hygiene. From what I could understand (I arrived a bit late), the following things can be rated in order of hygiene as follows (from the LEAST hygienic to the MOST):
  1. A kitchen sink
  2. A hamburger
  3. Your mouth
  4. Your cock
  5. Your arse
  6. A huge steaming pile of shit
  7. Your cock after being inserted into that huge steaming pile of shit

Poker at Jonah's

Last night’s poker was played at Jonah’s house. Jonah, Gary, Rafi, Eric, Adrian, Nik and Yossi were all present. We ate shriveled up wieners and two types of chips. There were at least two packs of sweet and sour Doritos. Adrian felt there was a lack of fizzy pop. But Jonah did knock up some very tasty ice tea as compensation. Adrian also moaned that the Bisley were of the worst flavour (pizza). Is this a trend in moaning behaviour? We shall have to pay attention.
Gary was exceptionally unlucky to have lost quite a lot of money on three occasions when he had a full house. He was understandably gutted at that. Jonah won money. Nik lost almost all of his.
The funniest gag of the night came quite close to the end of proceedings. I don’t remember how we got on to the subject (probably by talking about Adrian’s back waxing again), but Yossi said something like, “my balls are so hairy. It’s like a jungle down there. The other day I found a toothpick”. And then I said, “no Yossi, that was your penis!”. Oh how we laughed.

Poker at Adrian's

Last night we played poker at Adrian's poorly lit flat. It might be done up nicely, but it's so dark in there that it's hard to tell.
Anyway, in attendance were Adrian, Eric, Nik, Yossi and Jonah. Bits of chicken cooked in the oven were served with chips. There were at least two packets of sweet 'n sour doritos, but some people might say we need three (or four).
Jonah was the big winner. Nik was the big loser (and got a bit grumpy).
Eric phenomenally misread 3 hands, making some very amateurish mistakes in Ohama Hi-Lo, proudly displaying a straight comprised of 3 cards from his own hand. Tsk tsk.
Yossi has found a new line of employment in making up names for porno films, some of which involve Israeli legal headhunters. He also showed us he has a glowing future in hip hop music.
The chart shows that the best way to stay top of the leader board is by not coming to poker. Though are we already seeing the expected convergence around the zero line?

Poker at Gary's

Last night Poker was at Gary's. In attendance were Gary, Adrian, Eric, Jonah, Rafi and Yossi. The Kings were served chicken (only the brown meat and wings– the supermarket was out of white), corn, and chips. I assume that various types of fizzy pop were drunk.
The funniest thing that happened, according to Jonah at least, was that "Rafi told an inane story about the guy who shagged dead people and transmitted a 'dead person's virus' to his wife and child. That prompted some initial development of a niche porn version of the movie "The Sixth Sense" with the protagonist whispering "I shag dead people.""
The chart (which you can click on to see a bigger version, of course) shows three main things. 1) Adrian has been performing well in 2007); 2) Rafi is on a roll; 3) Jonah is funding the two previous points. We should make sure that Jonah comes very often indeed.

Poker at Nik's

Poker was once more at Nik's house last night after he made a rather scary ultimatum: if it's not at mine, he roared, then I can't come. So it was at his and he was there. Other people who were there were Adrian, Yossi, and Jonah. Eric might have been there but Adrian kept on skipping him, so perhaps he was just chopped liver. Rafi might have been there too, but even if he was his main contribution was to moan about feeling ill and then sneaking out while 29 shekels up and without saying goodbye. And that doesn't even include the bit about him arriving and demanding to shower.
Anyway, we played plenty of poker, ate some good sausages, had lots of sweet and sour Doritos, and drank some fizzy pop (though less than I thought would be consumed, truth to tell).
Oh yes, and we listened to a lot of Ravi Shankar and Adrian kept on trying to tell us about how that is the music you hear in the temples all day long in India, but I have the suspicion that not everyone was all that interested... Still, 10 out of 10 for effort.

Poker at Eric's

Last night's poker saw some big winners and some big losers (see graph). Present were Eric, Rafi, Adrian, Yossi, and Nik, with Jona "the Captain" Cummings making a guest appearance (and wearing a tie). Jona fell foul to the complicated rules of Omaha by betting on a full house that he didn't actually have. What a fool.
We played at Eric's house. He served chicken and chips with the usual array of drinks and crisps. Adrian showed us his waxed back and shoulders. He even asked Yossi to touch.

Tuesday, 16 January 2007

Poker at Nik's

Last night Adrian, Jonah, Rafi, Nik, and Eric played poker at Nik's house. We ate hot dogs from Supersal's range, which Adrian thinks are extremely well packaged. Jonah drank lots of red stuff. Nik and Adrian were winners.
We listened to music, some of which was modern and some of which was old. You can actually see a track list of the music we listened to here.
